Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson faces 30 felony charges after 10 dangerous inmates—including murderers—escaped through a hidden hole in the jail wall last May. The sheriff and her chief financial officer now stand accused of malfeasance in office, obstruction of justice, and maintaining false records in connection with the security failure that allowed convicted criminals to vanish into the night.
Ten Inmates Escaped Through Hidden Hole
Last May, ten inmates at the Orleans Justice Center executed a brazen escape through a small opening concealed behind a toilet. Security footage captured the moments before they fled, showing inmates working to pry open doors. The escapees included Antoine Massey, Lenton Venburen, Leo Tate, Kendell Myles, Derrick Groves, Jermaine Donald, Corey Boyd, Gary Price, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Keith Lewis. Investigators discovered bolts had been removed from the outside of the facility, raising immediate questions about who had access to that area.
Sheriff and CFO Face Multiple Charges
A special grand jury indicted Hutson on 30 felony counts, including malfeasance in office, filing or maintaining false public records, and obstruction of justice. Bianka Brown, the chief financial officer for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, received 20 similar felony charges. The Louisiana Attorney General’s office announced the indictments Wednesday, nearly one year after the escape. All ten escapees were eventually recaptured by law enforcement. Authorities also charged 13 additional people with helping the inmates escape, both from inside the jail and after they reached the streets.
Security Failure Raises Questions
The arrests mark a stunning fall for the parish’s top law enforcement official, who now faces serious prison time if convicted. The investigation revealed systematic failures at the correctional facility, with prosecutors alleging Hutson and Brown attempted to cover up security lapses rather than address them. The case highlights broader concerns about jail security protocols and accountability when leadership fails to maintain basic safety standards that protect both staff and the surrounding community from dangerous offenders.
