A Louisiana community faces devastating loss after eight children between ages 3 and 11 lost their lives in what authorities describe as a domestic violence incident that escalated into the deadliest mass shooting since January 2024.
The Attack and Its Aftermath
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith called the Sunday shooting unlike anything he witnessed in more than 40 years of law enforcement. The suspect, Shamar Elkins, shot the mother of his children and another woman, both of whom survived with serious injuries. Elkins fled on foot, carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint, and led police on a chase that ended when officers shot him dead. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed all eight children died at the scene.
Warning Signs and Family Separation
Elkins’s mother and stepfather told reporters the suspect called on Easter Sunday saying his wife wanted a divorce. During the conversation, Elkins spoke of wanting to take his own life and dealing with dark thoughts. Marcus Jackson, the stepfather, recalled telling him he could overcome anything, but Elkins responded that some people don’t come back from their demons. Crystal Brown, a cousin of one wounded woman, confirmed the couple was separating and scheduled to appear in court on April 20. Arguments about the separation preceded the shooting.
Domestic Violence Context
Shreveport officials classified the incident as domestic violence. Police continue investigating the exact nature of relationships between the gunman and all victims. Authorities have not released a motive for why the violence escalated to include eight children. The shooting raises concerns about warning signs in domestic situations and whether intervention opportunities existed before the tragedy unfolded.
Law Enforcement Response
Officers pursued Elkins after he stole a vehicle at gunpoint following the initial shooting. The chase ended with police using lethal force. Chief Smith emphasized the unprecedented nature of the case in his four decades of police work. Investigators continue piecing together evidence to understand what triggered the violence and whether additional factors contributed to the tragedy beyond marital separation.
